Baby is Moving Like Crazy!!

I've been able to feel my baby boy moving in my belly for about 3 weeks now, but in the last week the frequency has increased...going from a few kicks in the evening to some movement throughout the day: in the morning, some in the afternoon and TONS at night. Even around 2 in the afternoon yesterday at work I could feel and SEE his movements, which was super cool. I had been so anxious to start feeling movement and was bummed as the weeks would pass and I still didn't feel anything. At my last midwife appointment it was confirmed the placenta is in the front, so I missed out on feeling any fluttery movements early on. But it's been worth the wait as every movement I feel makes me so happy and as excited as the first time I felt him moving.

More updates: Last weekend my mom and sister were in town. We had a fantastic time together discovering funky restaurants in Seattle, eating Danish Napolean hats, shopping for maternity clothes, spending hours in Fred Meyer ;) And the Newbury-hosted shower was a delight! We played some games, ate good food, had great company and opened presents of course! I got a lot of super cute clothes, including a few handmades from Ange (and an original necklace of hers!). There were even some gifts sent with them from California--too thoughtful :)

Photos to come soon!

Feeling Baby Move

I finally felt my baby moving! Last night near bedtime I felt the area around my belly button rise a bit suddenly, then just to the right of it. It was so cool! Wes was also able to see/feel him. Looking forward to more movements!

It's a Boy!!!

Wes and I found out at our 20-week ultrasound (about a week and a 1/2 ago...sorry for the delay) that there's a little boy in my belly!! (see middle pic at left shows arrow pointing to his boyness). I had suspicions from the beginning that that might be so...and it felt so good to have them confirmed!! Of course we would have been happy either way, but now we can refer to "it" as "him" and all the planning that follows :)

The first present I bought for my little boy was a onesie that says "My dad is rad," some peepee teepees and a little knit hat from our local farmers market. It was such a bizarre feeling to do this...it filled me with such joy...to know I was buying a present for my son! It seemed like a mere taste of what it must feel like to spoil your kid...uh oh!

Feeling much better these days. Gone are the days of gagging (completely, yay!); I'm able to eat a much wider variety of foods; I'm not totally dragging every day (just tired at the end of the day); and my sciatica doesn't seem to be surfacing as frequently (but pelvis pain more so...ugh).

More to come when there's anything of note to report!

The Hungry Gags

I have been eating VERY differently than my non-pregnant self! I wouldn't exactly call this a food adventure, since it hasn't all been that exciting, but it has been interesting for sure!

The 1st week I had the worst low blood sugar episodes EVER! I seriously felt like I was going to pass out; more so than I've ever felt. Then about the 2nd week, I had the BIGGEST appetite I've ever had...I was eating every hour and a half!! Or sooner! Moving into the 3rd/4th week, I started becoming pickier. The blander and carb-ier the food the better. I was all about the saltines, mashed potatoes, fries, pasta. Protein and veggies did NOT appeal whatsoever (they still don't, really). I wasn't really craving anything; it was hard to figure out what sounded good (still having that problem, too) so when I thought of something, I went for it and had to have it. For instance, one night I could not for the life of me think of what I could eat, then developed a taste for this hemp granola cereal with freshly sliced strawberries. Of course it wasn't stocked on our shelves, so I trekked down to Fred Meyer at about 8 p.m. I haven't been able to eat it since.

That is one of the strangest occurrences so far--I'll have something, even if it's just once, and I'll be done with it...like the hemp cereal, tofu dogs or a meatball sub from Subway (I NEVER eat those)--all things I could only tolerate once, and I wouldn't be surprised if I steered clear of them the remainder of the pregnancy.

I'm eating way too many comfort foods--pizza, burgers, fries, pasta and cheese. Not EVERY day, but way more often than I ever do. Oy. Sorry baby :( I need to get on track! I went to Trader Joe's today and stocked up on baby carrots, cauliflower, salad greens, sweet potatoes. I got Morningstar veggie burgers, veggie corn dogs. So at least I'm trying harder!

So, luckily I haven't experienced any morning sickness, just gagging. And gagging can happen any time of day. But I've detected some gagging patterns in recent weeks. Right when I get up in the morning. Before breakfast. After breakfast. Strong smells (the following are all at work)--the kitchen during lunch, the bathroom, the paint in the hallway, the exhaust in the parking garage. Aside from the smells and aversions to unappetizing foods, I've come to realize the gagging signals hunger. I don't really feel hunger pangs anymore, I just gag. So when I gag, it's like "Baby's Gotta EAT!"

OK, enough of that, I'm probably making you all gag now! Unless I have a reflective pregnancy moment, the next time I write will more than likely be after we find out the sex. FIVE weeks to go!

First Entry on Pregnancy

Well, I'm 12 weeks, almost to the day and haven't much felt like starting something like this until now! I'm still a bit gaggy here and there (nice thought, I know), but I'm not as tired (typically), but the energy level goes up and down. More of a variety of foods are starting to appeal, but in the beginning it was really hard to find anything that sounded good, and it's usually not until right before I HAVE to eat that I can think of what sounds good...

Today was an exciting day because I had my 12-week appointment and we got to hear the heartbeat, which was between 162 and 166. For some reason, probably out of excitement I started laughing, which inhibited us from hearing the heartbeat...but I couldn't stop! I calmed down...Then the midwife said, "Let's do an ultrasound!" Wasn't expecting that...So it was a fun surprise! She brought in a portable one (so the quality wasn't as good, but it was still good enough!) and showed us our baby! At first the baby looked like it was just hanging out, sleepin', but then it started moving! And I start laughing again...uncontrollably!! So we could no longer see the baby...I had to look away and take some deep breaths, but then Wes and the midwife were talking about it, and I had to look and would start laughing again! I can only guess I was just so overcome with joy and excitement that I I didn't know how to react. It's funny, I guess you don't know what kind of emotions are going to flood out of you when you're experiencing something you've never experienced before! It really caught me off guard and made it seem even MORE real that there was a squirmy little bebe in there.

I scheduled my 20-week appointment, the one where we find out the sex...counting down!!

PLO becomes BNPPO

Just found out the tournament I used to work for worked out a 5-year deal w/ BNP Paribas, so instead of the Pacific Life Open, it will now be the BNP Paribas Open. According to this article the tourney needed a sponsor with more of an international stature to reflect its own internation status as a tournament (the 5th largest, behind the 4 grand slams!).

Wow, the site is already up and branded BNP! www.bnpparibasopen.org

Here are some pics from our trip there last year:

Thanksgiving 2008

So, it's clearly been awhile since I last blogged! I kept making notes to myself of things I wanted to blog about, but just never got around to writing (just did some published 2, 6-month old posts). And here it is nearly the end of 2008--yikes! The last few months of the year have been rather stressful, though, and it's been a challenge for us to de-stress and stay super positive, but we're doing ok.

I've noticed that bloggers love to make lists. So I decided to give it a go and make a few lists myself of things I am thankful for and things that just make me happy.

I am thankful for...
1. My husband -- I am so grateful and lucky to have Wes as my companion--He supports and helps me through difficult times and to de-stress, does the dishes when I cook dinner, makes me a hot breakfast every morning, and enjoys and shares my humor :) and I do the same for him!
2. Family & Friends -- Despite the state of the dads, they are coping and we're confident they will both fully recover. Our family and friends have been so supportive throughout the past few months, which is just amazing--I love you all!
4. Health -- I may moan about my neck now and again, but I am grateful the accident wasn't worse and overall I am healthy.
5. My job -- With the state of the economy as rough as it is at the moment, I'm thankful to work in an organization that is stable through tough times.
6. A new president!

Things that make me happy (not necessarily in any order, except #1):
1. Spending time w/ my favorite people
2. Reading
3. Hiking
4. Biking
5. Art exhibits at SAM
6. Concerts
7. Making people laugh
8. Craft projects
9. The weather in Washington
10. Going to the library
11. Driving around the countryside
12. Lattes
13. Discovering a new, good restaurant
14. Skating
15. Yoga
16. Travelling
17. Going to Wes's bike races
18. Blogging (doesn't it show?! HA!)
19. Photography
20. Cooking

Catch-up Post -- June 15, 2008

Yet another post I never published.

We just got back from our weekend in Winthrop (this really cool old-westy type town) for my birthday as well as a bike race. We stayed in a realllly cozy cabin in Mazama (next town west of Winthrop), which was awesome (except for the fact there was NO JACUZZI since they were undergoing a major remodel of the main hotel)!

Today was my actual b-day and the most special part of it was when Wes's bike team sang "Happy Birthday" as they passed me during their road race (I was camped out at the feed zone). It brought tears to my eyes! So sweet!! We drove back home via Hwy 20 and stopped off to see dad + the family, then home. Loooong day of driving!

First Week of Wimbledon is Almost Over :(

Would rather be there than watching it on TV! But who knows when it'll be affordable to ever go to europe?!?!

My post is only quasi-related to its moniker. I was inspired by some other blogs I'm reading to make a "things I love at the moment" list.

1. Wimbledon. I especially love getting up in the morning, having it on in the background, watching 1/16 of a match over breakfast with my husband. Mmmm, now it makes sense why I've eaten so many strawberries this week!

2. Polyvore. I could spend houuuursss on this site, yet haven't had those hours to waste yet! I look forward to it. I've created some interesting (mmm, bordering on the very bizarre) sets so far. Check 'em out.

3. NY Times Real Estate Slideshows. I've always been obsessed with houses, especially with really interesting floor plans. Used to draw up my own floor plans as a young one. Yeah, and another secret I'm about to reveal: I used to watch Real Estate Showcase in my spare time as a child. "Just ring a Bell, Ben and Beverly Bell, 779-4333!" Mmmk, if you a) didn't grow up in the desert and b) never watched Real Estate Showcase, you have NO idea what I'm talking about!

4. The Time Traveler's Wife. It came out a few years ago, but I didn't read it until last week. I want to read it again, actually. I was hoping it would eventually become a movie, and sure enough I looked it up on IMDB and there it was, due out at Christmastime starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams (perfect!). Maybe I like to read love stories even more now that I'm married. Wow, that was a velveeta cheese moment!

5. Discovering new foods through the weird diet Wes and I are on that we wouldn't have found otherwise (ie red quinoa and millet). Or having to concoct new variations of old favorites--I'm actually talking about one recipe in particular: Hot C(oat)coa.

At first we were strictly following a rotation, which means if we had cocoa one night, we couldn't have it again until night 5. Oy. So we've been indulging ourselves and having it every night to make up for the suffering we experience throughout the day (buckwheat, no tortillas). Since Wes can't have soy or honey (two key components in our old cocoa recipe), we've had to replace the soy with oat milk and the honey w/ evaporated cane juice.

Recipe: Heat 1 mug water at medium heat. Mix in two heaping teaspoons of dutch processed unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir in 1 mug oat milk and 4 teaspoons evaporated cane juice. Enyoy!

6. $1 sales. All sales at the gift shop at work go back to the hospital. They had an old inventory clearance sale today and I happened to arrive at the right time--when they announced the remaining items were ONE DOLLAR! I got Wes a pair of flip flops (retail: $30) and some other useless, fun crap!

7. My husband for surprising me with mountain bike shoes and pedals. I'm trying them out this weekend (practicing around our complex only...I know it's gonna be tough). Aren't they prreetty?? I don't want to get them dirty...

P.S. I'm tooootally overdue on posting about what we've been doing since we cleaned up our road (a lot, hence no posts. and it's been so long, our sign has been posted [recognizing Helen & Wes Wahlin as having adopted a slice of E. Lake Samm]). But some photos from our in-state travels might be kinda fun to check out. I'll try to post this weekend.

Adopt-a-Roadsters

Can you think of a better way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning
in the Pacific Northwest than picking up litter? Actually, it was quite a lot of fun! We found an interesting array of items from a fire extinguisher to a dead mouse to a tent! Of course there heaps of plastic bags, bottles and soda cans, but what I learned was that people snack a LOT in their cars and think nothing of disposing their nutrigrain bar wrapper out the window! I guess I never really grasped the concept of littering.

Stats: 3 hours and 8 bags of trash. We'll probably go out again later in the summer, in the early morning when there's no traffic. Hopefully by then our names will be plastered up on the sign so everyone knows who takes care of that really important 1.7 mile strip of East Lake Sammamish Parkway!

Community Supported Agriculture

I picked up our first box o' Full Circle Farm produce today, opened it, and started cookin'!

Shoulda done this a long time ago, but we were afraid a whole lotta fruits and veggies were gonna go to waste. We're starting out with the bi-monthly delivery and see if it's enough or too little (I'm thinkin' juuust right!).

I used all the carrots and half a bag of salad so far, but as you can see, there's plenty more to eat!

Strawberries, mangoes, spinach, lemons, green onions, ginger, apples, pears, capsicum, potatoes, sugar snap peas, green beans--we're going to be eating well for sure!

The grossest thing I've ever seen

I don't know if we heard about it elsewhere, but Wes and I were at Fred Meyer recently and couldn't get over how the air was filled the pungent odor of Krispy Kreme, and somehow the conversation meandered into -- I wonder if anyone has ever had a Krispy Kreme burger. Maybe I've been in the dark, but this EXISTS and is one of the grossest things I've ever seen.

I was on the Food Network site viewing the top 10 recipes of the day, and wanted to know what a "Lady's Brunch Burger" might be. So I click on the link and find out it's precisely the burger we had nightmares about--brought to you by Miss Paula Deen, of course. Eggs and bacon to top it all off? Early grave, Paula. Early grave.

Food Blogging

Mmmm Mmm! I have been making some tasty meals lately, most of them Italian-inspired. It didn't occur to me to blog about my dinners until my sister forwarded me a link to a blog I've been following for a few months now called Shutterbean, written by a gal in San Fran who uses all Trader Joe's products and makes inventive meals, snacks, desserts, etc. with them. No, I'm not turning this into a food blog, but if I have an inspiring meal, I'll share it. She has a kick ass camera, so my photos pale in comparison to hers, but typically all my ingredients are from the Joe's as well.

I never plans meals. I buy fruits, vegetables, cheeses, pastas, breads and some meats at the store and figure out something to do with them when I get home. For packing lunches in the morning to take to work, it's a terrible system, but for dinners I find it fun and a creative approach. It makes for super simple meals that usually take less than an hour to prep and cook. I don't always buy the same varieties; I try to mix it up, but as you'll see below, in the last few weeks I've been buying the same staples to make different dishes.

For lunch today I made whole wheat linguine with spinach-walnut pesto.

I didn't even really know if you could make pesto w/ spinach, but I did it anyway b/c I was craving it and I didn't have any fresh basil in the house. I did have a bag of pine nuts, but decided to use walnuts instead. I threw each of those ingredients into the cuisinart with a dash of chicken broth while the pasta was boiling. I took it out and mixed in some romano cheese (nearly nonfat and very tasty) with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper. I added my linguine, fat free feta from TJ's, cut up some yellow and red cherry tomatoes and had the tastiest lunch I've had in a long time.

I made a pasta primavera of sorts a few weeks ago that went over well with the hubby that included fresh carrots, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, and the feta and romano again (but somehow I don't tire of it). I Another one he loved, saying it was the best he's ever had (really!) was a ground turkey and vegetable lasagna. I used the no-boil lasagna noodles from TJ's, their tomato basil marinara and layered with my 2 favorite cheeses again, ground turkey that I pre-cooked with italian seasoning and garlic, portabellas, black olives and 45 minutes later, tasty goodness.
